Newly freed black women were denied voice within their own churches
Evidence
Boston black minister Peter Randolph cited gender proscriptions among the “strange customs” that he confronted when he returned to his Virginia birthplace soon after the Civil War to assume the pastorate of Richmond’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. Randolph noted the segregated seating for men and women and the men’s refusal to permit women at the business meetings of the church. Charles Octavius Boothe, a black Baptist minister in Alabama, recalled that in the early years of freedom women were not accustomed to the right to pray publicly.! Even as late as the 1880s in Tennessee and in Arkansas, black women met with virulent hostility in their efforts to establish separate societies. — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 562
