Newark’s 1967 uprising targeted white-owned stores specifically.
Evidence
The uprising lasted five days. Hayden thought it extremely focused: “Rampaging was aimed almost exclusively at white-owned stores.” This was a very particular form of Be-In. “People on the street felt free to take shelter from the police in homes of people they did not know.” Touring the scene at 5:00 a.m. on July 13, New Jersey governor Richard Hughes was dismayed by the “carnival atmosphere.” Then, as looting continued into the next day, Hughes called up 3,000 National Guardsmen and, assigning 500 state troopers to Newark, put the Black wards under martial law. — J.
