Neumann’s first Institute role was safeguarding its library, not social research

Evidence

Franz Neumann, as an émigré, had completed a second undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics under Harold Laski and Karl Mannheim, who had been `suspended’ from his academic post in Germany at the same time as Horkheimer. Neumann was commissioned by the Instituteperhaps on Laski’s recommendation, perhaps on Mannheim’sto look after the interests of the Institute’s library, the ownership of which had been transferred to the LSE in the hope that this would make it possible to get the library out of Germany. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 245
