Neoliberalism conflates bare survival with the good life by ignoring the means-ends entanglement

Evidence

By underestimating the constraints of information deficiency, by claiming not to evaluate the ends for which agents use the means they are provided by capitalism, the neoliberal paradigm comes to confuse simple survival (at any price) with the ‘good’ life – as suggested by its tendency to analyse criminality in terms of profit and cost calculations. By asserting the inextricable entanglement, as well as the unified dynamic, that binds the determinism of ends to the composition of means, the attention ecology can, in contrast, recognize (without claiming to be able to measure it precisely) the gap separating the minimal threshold of a practical rationality assuring our simple survival and the desirable horizon of an existence that has the potential to blossom. — Yves Citton, The Ecology of Attention, 116
