Neoliberal whites consume while racially marked others attend near-daily funerals
Evidence
As a woman of color born in Puerto Rico and a colonized subject who lived in abject poverty into my late twenties, I have always been convinced that the center of gravity of oppression for those of us deemed as “other” is not simply the psychological aberration of white people toward people of color. Rather, the racialization processes experienced by the oppressed are intractably connected to the manner in which the colonial matrix of power persists in the domination and exploitation of our communities by the wealthy and powerful elite—and enacted, for the most part, by those who are not themselves affluent, but who still chase the false myth of the American Dream in these neoliberal times. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 1410 (

Those registered as racially different, as bruised, are lured into Euro-likeness while warned that its inner treasures are almost always beyond their reach. White-likeness is a liking of what’s white, socially induced, a drive to be white-like, but also a grasping in the dark about its idealized experience, for its treasury. That “playing in the dark,” to twist Toni Morrison’s title, and the more or less extreme ambivalence both about what one thus is missing and what it is about one that inevitably makes one miss, if only one could put one’s finger on it, is the sinking sand, the depressing frustrations, of fixating on the unreachable. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1136 (

Neoliberal globalization is also responsible for much of the rank discontent of the white working and middle classes in the Global North, whose fortunes and futures crashed as manufacturing capital chased cheap labor in the Global South, finance capital turned the human need for shelter and old age provision into a source of megaprofits from speculation, and the idea of taxation to support civilization went the way of the typewriter. — Wendy Brown, In the Ruins of Neoliberalism, 324 (
