Nearly all military spouses abroad are women who bear the brunt of sacrifice

Evidence

Despite the benefits, however, family members make significant sacrifices to their lives when a spouse or parent is posted abroad. Even in an era when women join the military in large numbers—they account for about 15 percent of the force—most of these sacrifices are borne by women: around 95 percent of military spouses are female. Even though war can feel surprisingly distant on U.S. bases, amid the yoga classes and intramural basketball games, these women can usually attest more than anyone else how the proximity of death hangs over base life. — David Vine, Base Nation_ How U.S. Military Bases…, 440
