Nearly all district freed people left their enslavers within a few years
Evidence
As a general rule, most of the formerly enslaved left their enslavers and found work in the district, joined the Union Army once they were allowed to serve, or moved north. In 1866 the Freedmen’s Bureau reported that only seventy-seven people in the district were employed by their former enslavers. — Dorothy A. Brown, Getting to Reparations, 116
