Native court verdicts faced automatic review by francophone higher authorities

Evidence

Records were to be kept of all cases tried before the native courts. Monthly accounts of their proceedings were to be sent both to the lieutenant governor of the colony and to Dakar, where the attorney general could reopen any case. In addition, all circle court sentences exceeding five years’ imprisonment were automatically reviewed by the highest court of the federation, the Chambre d’homologation. — Alice L.
