Nationalism paired with populism breeds nostalgia and resentment politics
Evidence
In Bonikowski et al. (2019), sociologist Bart Bonikowski explains how populism, nationalism, and authoritarianism can operate as mutually constitutive concepts. Nationalism combined with populism creates conditions for the politics of nostalgia and resentment, while populism and authoritarianism enable the framing of the political opposition as the “morally corrupt enemy of the nation” allowing for exceptional measures to be taken against them, even those that violate the norms of democracy. Christian nationalism, therefore, provides a cultural framework where fear, nostalgia, and resentment are cultivated, and the pairing of this with populism and authoritarian tendencies highlights the threat it poses to a pluralistic democracy. — Andrew L. Whitehead; Samuel L. Perry, Taking America Back for God, 785
