Napoleon’s 1801 expedition was initially not aimed against Louverture

Evidence

After assuming power, Bonaparte resolved to send a military force to Saint-Domingue, and in early 1801 he began organizing an expedition of several thousand soldiers. At the time, however, the aim of the mission was not to attack Louverture. Indeed, in March of that year Bonaparte promoted Louverture to the rank of captain-general of Saint-Domingue, which meant that he would be the “commander-in-chief” over any French officer sent with troops to the colony. — Dubois, Laurent, Avengers of the New World_ The Story of…, 899
