Myrdal attributed black inequality partly to black cultural pathology requiring assimilation

Evidence

While there was no doubt that whites must repudiate racial prejudice (Myrdal did not use the term “racism”), blacks had also to rise to the occasion and demonstrate their worthiness. Indeed Myrdal, drawing on the work of E. Franklin Frazier (as Daniel Patrick Moynihan was to do 20 years later), suggested that there was a “pathological” aspect to black culture which only full assimilation could cure. — Michael Omi, Howard Winant, Racial Formation in the United States, 47
