Mutual recognition establishes a symmetrical dependence between self and Other
Evidence
The only means of breaking this vicious circle that throws me back on myself is to restore to the other, through mediation and recognition, his human reality, which is different from natural reality. The other has to perform the same operation. — Frantz Fanon, Constance Farrington, Black skin, white masks, 782 (

I am calling this process of mutual recognition the “promise” of freedom, since, like any promise, it requires two parties who bind themselves to one another in a shared commitment to uphold their trust in one another. Th e promise is bound by no more and no less than the freedom of the parties who bring it into existence. It is also a promise in the anticipatory sense insofar as it points us toward what Derrida refers to as a freedom to come. — Christine Daigle, Jacob Golomb (eds.), Beauvoir and Sartre, 644 (
