Muslim theologians read Paraclete as a corrupted prophecy of Muhammad

Evidence

This assertion by the Morisco author will be puzzling to readers both Christian and Muslim alike. Obviously in Christian theology “Paraclete” is a Greek term, “the Advocate,” and is the third member of the Trinity, not an alternative epithet of the Prophet Muhammad. However, what al-Hajari must have in mind is that some (most?) Muslim theologians regard “Parakletos” as the result of the textual corruption (tahrif) of an original, “periklytos,” interpreted by them as a reference to Muhammad (= “praised”). The New Testament text is thus regarded as foretelling or foreshadowing the coming of the Prophet of Islam. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1303

  • corroborated: 2 independent passages support this claim — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1303
