Muslim slaves were allowed to stay in Spain but recaptured Morisco refugees were not

Evidence

In general, the Muslim slave belonging to a Christian master was allowed to remain, because he was the property of his master. But then within this category was the even more awkward subcategory of Morisco refugees from Spain taken captive in North Africa (as, for example, in skirmishes round the Spanish presidio enclaves such as Oran). As we will see, the fear here seems to have been that they would have children who might eventually be manumitted, so that the Morisco problem might start up all over again. — L. P.
