Most of the million-plus pieds noirs resettled in metropolitan France

Evidence

By the beginning of August, of the 250,000 European inhabitants of Oran only 40,000 were left. When the exodus was all over it was estimated that 50,000 pieds noirs had gone to Spain; 12,000 to Canada; 10,000 to Israel; and 1,550 to Argentina. But the huge mass, 1,380,000 strong (which included the luckier Muslim refugees) — equivalent then to the combined population of the two biggest French cities after Paris — had flooded into France. Only 30,000 stayed bravely, or hopelessly, behind. — Horne, Alistair, A Savage War of Peace- Algeria 1954-1962, 1620 (#corroborates, via linked claim)

Ten years after the liquidation of the Algerian war, the face that France showed to the world was, once again, that of a truly great power, more self-confident than she had been at any time since before 1914, and certainly more prosperous in material terms. The economic revival of France under the stewardship of de Gaulle has been one of the miracles of the Western world, second only to Federal Germany’s recovery after 1945. No more remarkable yard-stick of it exists than the way in which France assimilated the over one million pieds noirs who flooded to her shores. — Horne, Alistair, A Savage War of Peace- Algeria 1954-1962, 1661 (#corroborates, via linked claim)
