Moses’ partisanship led him to slander governor Miller with provably false charges
Evidence
In at least one instance, moreover, Moses’ eagerness to attack Miller led him into a mistake inconsistent with the scrupulous, reliable research of the days when his only interest had been in reform. He charged that the Governor had overspent the executive-department budget and then, to conceal the fact, had paid the difference out of his own pocket and had had the state repay him out of “sums set aside for other purposes.” Miller replied—and proved—that he had indeed paid the difference, which had totaled over $8,000, but had refused to allow the state to repay him because he felt himself responsible. … So, because there was really no reply he could make, did Moses. — Robert A.
