Moses’ closest Yale friend was a scholarship student of exceptional academic drive

Evidence

Johnson, a very poor boy from Chicago attending Yale on a scholarship, was perhaps Moses’ closest friend. He had already earned a reputation as the class “brain,” and if Moses loved to read, “Five A” loved to study. Night after night, the two young men would retire immediately after supper to their living room in White Hall and stay at their desks until midnight or one or two o’clock in the morning, when they’d take long walks which usually ended at a little all-night luncheonette which served the turn-of-the-century equivalent of the late-evening hamburger—a heaping bowl of corn flakes and milk. — Robert A.
