Monopoly erosion of market autonomy caused capitalist crises, so abolishing it ends them.
Evidence
Pollock had always seen the decisive cause of capitalist crises as lying in the autonomy of the market, which, under pressure from the monopolies, was functioning less and less well as a self-control mechanism for the economy, and was producing anarchy and economic distortion to an ever greater extent. The fact that the autonomy of the market was abolished under state capitalism seemed in Pollock’s eyes to remove the decisive cause of the crises. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 305
Categorization
- DEFINE: Pollock’s causal mechanism: market autonomy was the economy’s self-control mechanism, and its breakdown produced anarchy rather than equilibrium.
- XREF: Directly counters Hayekian claims (and Neumann’s own Behemoth thesis) that monopoly capitalism still needs state terror to survive — see the reader’s earlier Marxism and Form notes on the Frankfurt consensus that state capitalism requires dictatorship.
