Modulated light beams can generate sound from dark surfaces via heating

Evidence

It is possible to create sound directly from a dark surface by shining a strong light beam onto it and modulating the beam at audio frequencies. Sudden heating of the surface by the light causes the air next to the surface to expand suddenly (accelerate), which as we know generates sound. The most dramatic example we have discussed involves the sudden heating of a column of air by an electrical discharge, as in lightning (see section 7.9). β€” Eric J.
