Modern systems give no choice about participation, only grounds for complaint.
Evidence
At the level of social inclusion there is no choice of.opting in or opting out; nor is it a question of being well born or of being ‘elected’.! Both these bases of forming social trust have disappeared. Modern life depends on contingent structures and changeable conditions. One cannot avoid participation because ‘such is life’, but there is no rational basis for accepting what is unavoidable. There is neither the need nor even the occasion to decide about confidence in the system. One can only feel unhappy and complain about it. — Diego Gambetta, Trust - Making and Breaking Cooperative…, 1426
