Modern cities exceed preindustrial ones in population heterogeneity
Evidence
There is certainly no question but that the residents of the modern city are a heterogeneous lot. Of course, there are differences among cities in this regard-Des Moines is undoubtedly no match for New York or London-but these differences appear rather minor when we compare the city to the small town or isolated settlement. In fact, given the ease of modern travel and worldwide migratory tendencies, the modern city is probably a good deal more heterogeneous than was the preindustrial. β Lyn H.
