Mindfulness for teachers can be an act of liberation, not just stress relief.
Evidence
My intent is to add to the scholarly discussion on teacher mindfulness by going beyond the commonly discussed psychological benefits for teachers, such as emotional self-regulation or stress relief (Jennings et al., 2017), to consider the liberatory and self-transformative potential of mindfulness. My argument is that while the documented psychological benefits to teachers are significant, using contemplative practices merely as interventions focused on changing behavior or reducing stress limits the potential of what mindfulness can bring to a teacher’s life. Rather, I see the potential for teacher mindfulness to be considered an act of agency that leads a teacher toward Freirean notions of liberation and transformation. — James D.
