Medieval polemic fused Muhammad’s alleged fraud with violence into one inseparable double crime
Evidence
In its public aspect Muhammad’s crime was a double one; Fra Fidenzio expressed this well when he said that Muhammad, because he had few supporters, used a double contrivance, of fiction and of oppression, to gain a larger following. From the fiction of prophethood it was never possible to separate the oppression by torce and violence which was always associated with the ‘kingship’ of Medina; but, important as this was thought to be, detailed knowledge of the Medinan period was rare. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 526
