Medieval Muslim commentators held Judas was crucified in Jesus’s place

Evidence

This was the only place where Tripoli thought he should elucidate the text, the idea that the Jews slandered Christ by claiming to have crucified Him. In order to do so he had recourse to Islamic sources, to the commentators of the Qur’an ‘on the false opinion of the death of Christ’. On this authority Tripoli explained that it was Islamic belief that Judas was crucified in place of Christ, whose likeness he had received. This careful distinction between the commentators and the Qur’an is part of Tripoli’s very rare respect for the text. Tripoli added that Muslims thought it would be contrary to God’s justice that the innocent should suffer. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 944
