Medieval mission strategy fused conquest with compelled Christian education

Evidence

Llull’s Liber de fine represents a change of missionary strategy. Indeed, he still claims that his necessary reasons can prove the superiority of Chris- tianity, but he now seems to realize that irenic, philosophically based debate alone will not suffice. Military force must be used to conquer territory from Saracen rulers and to force them to open their lands to the preaching of Christian missionaries; while conversion is voluntary, it is to be encouraged by the compulsory Christian education of prisoners. — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 1342
