Medieval Castile linked apostasy to Muslims with military treason and defection

Evidence

The Partidas further specifies that apostates may be accused up to five years after their death, and only those who have ā€œrendered some great service to the Christian religionā€ may escape punishment. This last stipulation shows again the political context of apostasy: it allows rebels who have gone over to Castile’s Muslim enemies to return to Castilian society in exchange for some ā€œgreat serviceā€ā€”presumably either military intelligence or military service. — John V.
