Many professional influencers faked mirror selfies that were never taken in mirrors
Evidence
Here we will credit influencer Kara Del Toro, whose popular TikTok video is often cited for “revealing” something unusual about many mirror selfies today. In Del Toro’s video, we see numerous, flawless mirror selfies, each hovering behind her using the TikTok greenscreen feature. These selfies all have perfect lighting and are seemingly taken in a smudgeless, impossibly clean mirror. Each photo shows an influencer holding their phone, presumably using it to take their photo in the mirror. But, as Del Toro tells us, “Here’s the secret: there is no mirror.” — Grant Bollmer, Katherine Guinness, The Influencer Factory, 85
Categorization
- FICTION: A fiction or cultural-criticism vignette could pivot on the ‘no-mirror mirror’ as a doubled conceit — the subject gazes at a self that only exists as fabrication, echoing the influencer whose ‘authentic self’ is a manufactured public object.
- CANDY: Lightweight but genuinely tweetable: influencer influencer Kara Del Toro outed the mirror selfie as a greenscreen fake — ‘there is no mirror.’
