Majorities cannot claim superior correctness in matters of inner conscience

Evidence

The idea of the majority needs, at least, an additional, entirely new dignity. For, it may be plausible, but it is by no means self-evident, that the more correct knowledge is, in fact, on the side of the majority. It is particularly dubious where knowledge, and action upon this knowledge, is based on the inner responsibility of the individual as in the more profound religions. The whole history of Christianity has been characterized by the opposition of the individual conscience to the resolutions and actions of majorities. — Georg Simmel, The Sociology of Georg Simmel, 6277
