Mainstream newspapers openly editorialized for police crackdowns on protesters.

Evidence

On June 13, the morning of the fourth scheduled protest, São Paulo’s newspapers delivered a clear message: the police need to crack down on this group. This was not done with innuendo, or with suggestive news coverage, but with frank calls to action. The Estadão editorial committee wrote, “The authorities should have determined that the police take more rigorous action, since the very beginning.” In an editorial entitled “Retomar a Paulista,” or “Retake Paulista Avenue,” Folha de S.Paulo published this opinion: “The few protesters that seem to have anything on their minds except for hoods justify their violence as a supposed reaction to the supposed brutality of the police.” Folha continued: “It is time to put a stop to this.” — Vincent Bevins, If We Burn, 379
