Lowenthal’s novella study was a pioneering Marxist sociology of literature
Evidence
While Grünberg was director, there was only one exception in what was otherwise a homogeneous range of research topics. Leo Lowenthal, who had been receiving an Institute scholarship since 1926, was working on a Sociology of the German Novella in the Nineteenth Century. When the book was finally published after the Second World War, it became clear that it was a work of Marxist sociology of literature such as hardly anyone else at that time was practising. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 115
