Llull’s crusade plan preferred conquering Granada before the Holy Land

Evidence

Llull gives five possible itineraries: first, overland through the Byzantine empire and the lands of the Turks; second, by sea to the island of Rashid in Egypt, from which the conquest of Alexandria could be undertaken; third, to Cyprus, which then could be used as a base for mainland conquests; fourth, to Tunis by sea and then across Africa by land. But Llull prefers the fifth option: first the conquest of the Arab kingdom of Granada, then across the straits of Gibraltar to Ceuta, then a gradual conquest that would push east to Tunis, Egypt, and finally Jerusalem. — John V.
