Lifetime major depression is less common among Blacks than Whites.

Evidence

Recent studies of mental health reveal a similar overall pattern. Major epidemiological surveys of incidences of depression among Black and White Americans (Kendler, Gallagher, Abelson, & Kessler, 1996) show that national lifetime prevalence rate of major depression is actually lower for Blacks (about 12 percent) than for Whites (about 16 percent). — John F.
