Left SPD intellectuals prefigured Institut positions by attacking Kautsky’s mechanistic materialism
Evidence
Many of the positions Gurland took at the time were similar to those advocated independently by the Institut. For example, he strongly attacked Karl Kautsky’s mechanistic materialism, in favor of a Marxism that recognized its roots in Hegelian dialectics. He also chided the Communist Party for its subservience to Moscow and its unwillingness to jeopardize its party structure to make a revolution. Like Kirchheimer and Neumann, he was a member of the SPD’s left wing, imploring its membership to engage in active praxis instead of waiting for capitalism to collapse from the weight of its own contradictions. — Martin Jay, The Dialectical Imagination, 477
