Leaders who manipulate the oppressed negate the very goal of liberation

Evidence

For the dominant elites, organization means organizing themselves. For the revolutionary leaders, organization means organizing themselves with the people. In the first event, the dominant elite increasingly structures its power so that it can more efficiently dominate and depersonalize; in the second, organization only corresponds to its nature and objective if in itself it constitutes the practice of freedom. Accordingly, the discipline necessary to any organization must not be confused with regimentation. It is quite true that without leadership, discipline, determination, and objectives—without tasks to fulfill and accounts to be rendered—an organization cannot survive, and revolutionary action is thereby diluted. This fact, however, can never justify treating the people as things to be used. The people are already depersonalized by oppression—if the revolutionary leaders manipulate them, instead of working towards their conscientização, the very objective of organization (that is, liberation) is thereby negated. — Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 570

Categorization

  • DEEPTHINKING: The central tension the reader named: Freire admits organization needs discipline and leadership yet insists manipulation negates liberation. This is the crux of the vanguard critique — Freire offers discipline-vs-regimentation as his answer but the reader must decide if it suffices.
  • XREF: Directly engages the reader’s stated contest about the facilitator who already knows the correct consciousness; pairs with his own concern about whether Freire’s method escapes creating a new vanguard.
