Latin American racial taxonomy proliferated into vast numbers of categories
Evidence
The multitudinous possibilities of mixture up and down the pyramidal schema, physical and cultural, are reflected in the proliferation throughout Latin America of categories to characterize the racial in-betweens. If Thomas Stephens’s very useful and deeply revelatory Dictionary of Latin American Racial and Ethnic Terminology is any indication, ethnoracial terms of characterization, not least of color mixture, are voluminous and multiplicitous as much in their shifting meanings over time as in their sheer numbers, range, and reach at any given moment. Their regulatory power is as culturally prolific and diffused through the social habitus, the civil society, of a nation-state as formally inscribed in state bureaucracy and structures. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1159

- QUESTION: How many ethnoracial terms does Stephens’s dictionary actually catalog? The sheer volume claim is worth checking against a number.
