Land privatization in India displaced 30 million people between 1990 and 2004
Evidence
In 2020, India witnessed the largest strike in world history, involving 250 million workers, mostly in the agricultural sector, which employs over half of the country’s workforce. Among other things, farmers demanded a halt to the privatization of agricultural land. Land acquisition in India has accelerated in the past thirty-five years: the number of displaced people more than doubled between 1990 and 2004, from slightly under 30 million to 60 million. Of the total land acquired between 1947 and 2004, more than half was forested areas and common property, disproportionately affecting small subsistence farmers. — Clara E.
