Kusama’s body-painting events were embedded in regular weekly dance parties at marginal venues

Evidence

In late January, Kusama staged a version of Self-Obliteration as part of the Group Image’s regular Wednesday night dance party at Palm Gardens. The movie was projected over the band, flanked by two screens showing Laurel and Hardy’s 1932 World War I comedy, Pack Up Your Troubles. In a square black-light corral at the center of the ballroom, Kusama began painting dots on a boy’s bare torso. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 1171
