Ku Klux Klansmen bombed a Birmingham church, killing four Black girls
Evidence
A group of Ku Klux Klansmen bombs the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, which, like many Black churches, was a center of organizing for the civil rights movement. Four young girls are killed: Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair. At least twenty people are injured. Many years later, three of the four conspirators are brought to trial and convicted; the fourth dies before he can be tried. — Nikole Hannah-Jones et al., The 1619 Project, 1063
