Knox moved the ordnance with eighty ox teams and sleds over winter terrain

Evidence

Knox’s letter to Washington continued, “I have made forty two exceedingly strong sleds & have provided eighty yoke of Oxen to drag them as far as Springfield [Massachusetts] where I shall get fresh Cattle to carry them to Camp” on wagons. In a letter to his wife sent on the same day, Knox added, “We shall cut no small figure in going thro’ the country with our Cannon, Mortars &c drawn by eighty Yoke Oxen.” He hoped to complete the trek “in 16 or 17 days” if the weather cooperated with sufficient snow cover to slide the heavily loaded sleds with minimum resistance. It didn’t. — Edward J. Larson, Declaring Independence, 103
