Kind treatment and preaching failed to make forcibly converted Moriscos abandon Islam.

Evidence

The Monarchs ordered their officers, both military and judicial, to favor these converts and encourage them. But it soon became apparent how little these kindnesses had served to get them to abandon being Moors. For although they said they were Christians, one could see they paid more regard to the rites and ceremonies of Muhammad’s sect than to the precepts of the Catholic church. They zealously shut their ears to everything they were told by the bishops, clergy and friars in their preaching… . Trusting in those empty fictions they called j´ofores or predictions, they put all their hope in them, because they predicted they would become Moors once more, and return to their former state. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 371
