Kanye’s upbringing bridged Black Panther activism and Nanjing, China exposure

Evidence

Kanye was raised in an intellectual and politically engaged household. His mother, Donda, was a civil rights activist turned professor with a doctorate in education. His father, Ray, a former Black Panther, worked as a photojournalist and Christian marriage counselor. They divorced when Kanye was three, and he spent his childhood navigating diverse environments, from gang-heavy Chicago neighborhoods to suburban enclaves. He also did a stint in Nanjing, China, where his mother taught on a Fulbright fellowship. “Living in Chicago and all my friends are gangbangers, and then I’d go to the suburbs in the summertime and I’d be known as ‘the Black kid,’ ” he later recalled. — W.
