Jodorowsky’s Fando y Lis premiered amid the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre

Evidence

Based on a 1958 play by Jodorowsky’s Panic Movement colleague Fernando Arrabal, the movie premiered at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival shortly after a Mexico City bloodbath, when the army massacred protesting students on the eve of the Olympics. Two seekers, Fando and his paralytic girlfriend Lis, travel through a wasteland to the legendary city of Tar. Jodorowsky, who directed the play in Paris, augmented Arrabal’s text with sadistic, vaguely Catholic vignettes. A blind man draws blood from Lis’s arm and drinks it down like wine; after she dies, mourners devour her body. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 1547
