Jazz avant-garde formed a union-like collective modeled on artist-run galleries.
Evidence
The October Revolution inspired Dixon to organize the Jazz Composers Guild, a collective modelled in part on the artist-run galleries that had populated Tenth Street. Members would work together in solidarity, withholding labor from low-paying gigs, collectively negotiating contracts and verifying their enforcement. Stollman attended the early meetings to provide legal advice. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 579

- XREF: Directly parallels the artist-run co-op/gallery structure central to the book’s thesis about how avant-garde scenes institutionalize themselves — same scaffolding as Tenth Street galleries and later SoHo.
