Israeli nationalist parades weaponize sensory dominance to confine Palestinians to invisibility
Evidence
A more overt and violent manifestation of the occupation of the senses occurs during marches and parades by right-wing political and Jewish religious groups throughout the Palestinian neighborhoods in oEJ. These events invade colonized spaces with visual and auditory stimuli intended to restructure the daily sensory stimuli that the indigenous Palestinian residents experience. For example, on “Jerusalem Day,” an annual Israeli national holiday celebrating the “reunification” of Jerusalem – i.e., the military occupation of the eastern part of the city on that day in 1967 – large Zionist parades are held in the Old City. The parades penetrate Palestinian spaces and neighborhoods, flaunting a sea of Israeli flags and other Jewish nationalist symbols. During these marches, Israeli Jews seize and dominate the streets, loudly, aggressively, and disruptively transforming Palestinian neighborhoods and marketplaces to demonstrate control, intimidate Palestinian residents, and incite fear designed to motivate Palestinians to stay put in silence and remain invisible. — Nadim N.
