Israeli military orders after 1967 systematically deindustrialized the Palestinian economy.
Evidence
Between 1967 and 1971, the Israeli military issued over two hundred orders regulating Palestinian economic life. Among them, the closure of all thirty bank branches operating in the West Bank and Gaza except for two, which were placed under Israeli supervision; the prohibition of investment from Israel—or from abroad—in the Palestinian economy; the ban on importing new machines (Palestinian firms could purchase only secondhand machines); and the imposition of a complex web of administrative procedures and restrictions, still in place today, that make it virtually impossible for Palestinians to start a business. Between 2016 and 2018, Israeli military authorities approved only 3 percent of building permits in the largest part of the West Bank under its direct control, known as Area C. — Clara E.
