ISIS frames rape of nonbelievers as a religious act drawing closer to God

Evidence

A young escapee describes the religious ritual (Callimachi, 2015). After praying, “[h]e told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbe-liever.” And by raping her “he is drawing closer to God.” Sexual assaults become spiritual acts. ISIS uses religiously sanctioned sexual assault also as a recruitment tool. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 2440

Categorization

  • XREF: Direct instantiation of Bandura’s core moral disengagement thesis — religious justification functions as moral justification (chapter 1 mechanism). This passage shows how a harmful act is morally reframed as virtuous.
  • SEED: The inverse of the moral disengagement machinery: here perpetrators claim MORE divine merit through harm. A piece contrasting how religious systems either constrain or license violence via textual selection could be strong.
