Interwar French fiction framed mixed-race people as tragically unable to fit either society.
Evidence
A whole series of novels from the interwar years also explored the plight of the metis. For example, Chivas-Baron, Confidences de metisse; Cendrieux, Fran(:ois Phuoc, metis; Wild, L’autre race; Favre, L’orientale I930. These novels stressed such themes as the metis’ hatred for their French fathers, the inability of the metis to fit into French society, and the incompatibility of the two races. — Alice L.
