Initial coding balanced emergent grounded themes against the study’s pragmatic aims

Evidence

The initial stage of analysis involved a grounded exploration of themes across the 36 interviews. Two qualitative researchers from the team (Alina I. Palimaru and Sarah Weilant) coded eight transcripts (22 percent of the sample) independently, then met with the project leader (Ryan Andrew Brown) to discuss and reconcile codebook development, code definitions, and coding rules. Codebook development was discussed in terms of balancing grounded findings with the study’s scope and final report goal: practical recommendations relating to radicalization prevention and deradicalization support. — Ryan Andrew Brown, Todd C.
