Industrialized education systems function as instruments of social control that dehumanize students

Evidence

Freire (1973) described the educational system in industrialized countries as a means of social control. … Most frightening of all is the level of alienation in which we become robots without even knowing it, marching to unspoken orders and failing to challenge the reason why. We are dehumanized, unable to express our feelings or even our fears. (p. 18) In that light, we hope that this chapter prompts educators to use and foster their students’ critical consciousness to unveil the unspoken orders that cause our schools to be places of inequity. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 283
