Indian land claims took up to sixty years to resolve.
Evidence
A total of 370 claims were filed on behalf of the Tribal Nations, numbering roughly 176, that had been recognized by the federal government by the summer of 1946, when the Indian Claims Commission was established. However, many claims included multiple allegations, and the commission treated each allegation as a separate matter, resulting in a total of more than six hundred claims. While 204 claims were dismissed, 274 claims resulted in awards. Some claims were still unresolved when the commission ended in 1978, and those were transferred to the US Court of Federal Claims. The final claim was resolved in 2006. Justice moved at a snail’s pace for Tribal Nations. — Dorothy A. Brown, Getting to Reparations, 160
